Drury Lane was one of Londons poorest areas and the Sainsburys shop quickly became popular for offering high-quality products at low prices. It was so successful that further branches were opened in other market streets in Stepney, Islington and Kentish Town. In addition, their head office is in J Sainsbury plc, 33 Holborn, London, EC1 N2HT.By 1882, John James Sainsbury had four shops and had plans to expand his business further. He opened a depot in Kentish Town, north-west London, to supply this growing chain and, on the same site, built bacon kilns that produced the first Sainsbury brand product. Eternal Love Through Death in John Keats Bright Star Essay Love, being one of the most debated topics in literature, often serves as a source of inspirations for many of writers and poets, including John Keats. Throughout his life, he wrote countless love poems and letters, addressing his lover ââ¬â Fanny Brawne. The star, apart from being the symbol of steadfastness and constancy, it is also a metaphor representing Keats himself. Through Keatsââ¬â¢ idea of ââ¬Å"Mansion of lifeâ⬠, the poem is consisted of two floors where the first floor displays his passionate love for Brawne while the second floor talks about his inner desire for death. Keats first expresses his ideal, however paradoxical love. There are two essential yet conflicting qualities in this poem ââ¬â the reality verses the ideal and the immortal verses the mortal. On one hand, he would like to be like a star, steadfast and unchanging. On the other, he dislikes the solitude of the star as it has to watch ââ¬Å"the moving watersâ⬠and ââ¬Å"the new soft-fallen mask/Of snowâ⬠from afar like a ââ¬Å"sleepless Eremiteâ⬠. He continues to state that if he ââ¬Å"has to live everâ⬠, he would rather ââ¬Å"pillowââ¬â¢d upon my fair loveââ¬â¢s ripening breastâ⬠. The ideas to be eternal and to love simultaneously do not go hand in hand. To love, one has to be human and therefore not an immortal, steadfast star. In the last line of the poem, Keats acknowledges that he would like to ââ¬Å"live everâ⬠in love, but he has to be human in order to experience love, which hints that the love between Keats and Brawne will not last and will eventually fade away as time goes by. The other possible alternative to immortalize their love is ââ¬Å"swoon to deathâ⬠. One of Keatsââ¬â¢ letters from 3 May 1818 to Fanny Brawne echoes the idea of ââ¬Å"swooningâ⬠and it says ââ¬Å"â⬠¦I love you; all I can bring you is a swooning admiration of your Beauty.â⬠(Poet.org) This can be interpreted that he wants to die while experiencing intense, ecstatic love or according to the letter, overwhelmed by her beauty. While I was reading Bright Star, I could not help but catch the similarity between Keats and Shakespeareââ¬â¢s idea of love. In the opening of Shakespeareââ¬â¢s sonnet 116, ââ¬Å"Let me not to the marriage of true minds Admit impediments. Love is not love Which alters when it alteration finds, Or bends with the remover to remove: O no! it is an ever-fixed mark That looks on tempests and is never shaken; It is the star to every wandering bark, Whose worthââ¬â¢s unknown, although his height be taken.â⬠(Shakespeare) Shakespeare talks about his ideal love and marriage. Keats, being a reader of Shakespeare, is in some way affected or inspired by him. Shakespeare describes love as an ââ¬Å"ever-fixed marksâ⬠that ââ¬Å"is never shakenâ⬠even in the wildest storms. Keats transformed Shakespeareââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"ever-fixedâ⬠into steadfastness. Keats then moves on to talk about a more sexual and sensuous love. With more explicit descriptions of ââ¬Å"my [his] fair loveââ¬â¢sâ⬠body parts, those descriptions hint the idea of sex and orgasm. He imagines himself ââ¬Å"pilliowââ¬â¢d upon my fair loveââ¬â¢s ripening breastâ⬠. The word ââ¬Å"ripeningâ⬠gives a notion of youth, implicating that the lady is young and energetic. Keats also describes the rising and falling of her chest when she takes her ââ¬Å"tender-taken breathâ⬠. If he could, he would ââ¬Å"so live everâ⬠. However, it is impossible to live forever and the only solution would be ââ¬Å"swoon to deathâ⬠. Keats did not explicitly tell the readers what it means to be ââ¬Å"swoon to deathâ⬠and leave us a lot of room for imaginations. The word ââ¬Å"swoonâ⬠and other erotic images of the ladyââ¬â¢s body parts bring us to the subtext of the poem ââ¬â sex. La petite mort is a French idiom or euphemism for org asm, meaning little death. According to Oxford Dictionaries, ââ¬Å"swoonâ⬠means ââ¬Å"to enter a state of ecstasy or raptureâ⬠. Whether he intended to talk about sex at the end of the poem is still indefinable as we have no idea of what Keats was thinking when he wrote the poem. Though Keats did not write any overly sexual poetry, there is always a strong erotic indication in many of his works. If the sexual subtext is intended in the poem, I believe that it creates a nice denouement to the poem. Keatsââ¬â¢ obsession with death and his love for Fanny are intertwined seamlessly throughout the poem. In one of his letters, he states ââ¬Å"I have two luxuries to brood over in my walks, your loveliness and the hour of my deathâ⬠(Poet.org). Not only is Keats intimidated by death, to some extent he is also intrigued by it. Even though he is worried about the approaching death, to him the promise of death is comforting and soothing. The only resolution to achieve the paradoxical ideal of being eternal as well as experiencing love is death. Through death, immutability and steadfastness can be achieved. Keats has seen many people died in his lifetime. His father died when he was eight; his mother died from tuberculosis when he was 14; his brother Tom died also from tuberculosis when he was 19. Along with his familyââ¬â¢s deaths, he has also seen a lot of patients died as he was also a medical student. Therefore, constantly seeing people die in a way reminds him of the tran sience and the mutability of life. There are some religious references in the second quatrain of the poem. All these references, other than conveying the loneliness and the solitude of the star, also illustrate his longing for the promising death. The poem was written in 1819, the same year when Keats contracted with tuberculosis. The word ââ¬Å"ablutionâ⬠is heavily loaded with connotations, both religion and about death. From the Oxford Dictionary, ââ¬Å"ablutionâ⬠refers to the washing or cleansing of the bodyâ⬠. In Christianity, there are different forms of ablution and one of them is the preparation before the burial of a dead person. Here Keats is hinting that his death is near and the priest will cleans his body after his death with ââ¬Å"the moving watersâ⬠. Further Keats also mentions the ââ¬Å"soft-fallen mask/Of snowâ⬠in the following two lines. Seasons always act as symbols of different stages of human life in literature. Spring refers to birth or new beginning; summer means m aturity; autumn represents old age while winter symbolizes death. In line 7-8, with ââ¬Å"the mountains and moorsâ⬠covered in snow, such explicit image suggests that death is approaching. Though death is coming, Keats is not browbeaten. Yet, he is fascinated with death as it helps him to accomplish the co-existence of eternity and love. Bright Star is a poem that can be read on many different levels. To me, the poem is not merely a declaration of his ardent love for Fanny Brawne. It is also an expressive lyric poem addressing his awe as well as obsession with death. Who is the monster - Frankenstein or his creation? "Frankenstein" written by Mary Shelly, was first published in 1818. The book has sold millions of copies and has become deeply rooted in today's society by films and other versions of the books. The main bulk of the story is about Victor Frankenstein's horrendous adventure. However there are sub-plots throughout the story, Robert Walton's journey to the North Pole, and the time the monster spends with the DeLacy family. The definition of a monster is, "something of unusual size or appearance, a huge terrifying creature or an evil person." [Chambers School Dictionary] All of these definitions can be related to both Frankenstein and the creation. To the creation, a huge terrifying creature and of unusual size and appearance, and to Frankenstein an evil person, powered by his hatred of the monster. Mary Shelly's life was very similar to the story of "Frankenstein". Her child, also called William, died at a young age. Her mother died at childbirth and possibly gave the sense of abandonment felt by the creation, "My person was hideous and my stature gigantic. What did this mean? Who was I? What was I? Whence did I come? What was my destination? These questions continually recurred, but I was unable to solve them." This showed that the monster was confused about himself, yet had nobody to ask and to confide in. Much like Mary Shelly. When Mary was writing Frankenstein she was reading a book called Emile by John Jacques Rousseau. In this text, Rousseau argued that men are by nature harmless, (i.e. children are naturally innocent) but are made cruel by society, thought the things they have done to them. Rousseau's quote was, "Men become monsters because... ...e a second monster, the bride for the creation. However half way through Frankenstein destroyed the corpse and thus angered the monster further, when Frankenstein could have had the monster out of his life for all eternity. This is also a good example of Frankenstein's selfishness as it shows that he was only thinking about himself as he believes that the creation well use this second monster to reek havoc upon the world, "Three years before, I was engaged in the same manner and created a fiend whose unparalleled barbarity [Once again we see that he is being biased towards the monster as he never tried to reason with the monster and any time.] had desolated my heart and filled it forever with the bitterest remorse. I was now to form another being of whose dispositions I was alike ignorant; she might become ten thousand times more malignant that her mate".

I was given a chance to visit the Himalayas, to one of the concealed places in the province where a panoramic view was preserved. It was very provincial and solemn. Its coniferous and subtropical forests, wetlands, and montane grasslands are as much a part of this world as the inhospitable, frozen mountaintops that tower above. The mountains were the wrinkles of age and pimples of youth on Earthââ¬â¢s crusty outer skin. They rose up as the crust collides, cracks, crumbles, folds, and spews. They dominated their surroundings with towering height. I clearly remember when I was on my way there that the emerald shade produced by the different kinds of trees were smiling and alluring me to join them. However, what I first saw was just superficial compared to its hidden beauty awaiting me, as I explored the place, especially when I went around the surrounding area where the sun ate away the darkness. Since it was miles away from the city, I had to climb up the mountain. But, as I finally reached its zenith, I could step on the fogs as they rose going up to the sky and formed as clouds; I could feel that I was on the top of the world, thus the cold dewdrops touched my toes as they dispersed and went along with the air. After a while, I didnââ¬â¢t know that I still had to clamber down to finally reach another astonishing place. From there, I stayed in my grandfatherââ¬â¢s ancestral house. Nearby, I could see the hills planted with rice. Their fronds were swaying and dancing as the wind blew. Some were brimming with the golden yellow grains ready to harvest. At the backyard, an array of different trees weighed down with copious fruits that were mouthwatering. On the other side, were bountiful vegetables watered with love and care. These plants were within a reach which served as our everyday food. The tour guide took me to one part of their place which truly took my breath away; to my surprise, they let me ride at the back of their _Carabao_ââ¬Å½, thus, I felt the tail of it at as it swung from side to side. As I got there, I was amazed at what I saw! The river was crystal clear; the pebbles were like diamonds that glittered in the water. I even felt like bathing in the river and it felt good knowing that the river was unpolluted. I didnââ¬â¢t even see any moss nor trash, instead just dried leaves falling from the trees that surrounded it, but I was oblivious as to where the water took theà leaves as they swam away from my sight. Furthermore at night, the place was covered with darkness since there was no electricity in the place, however, thanks to the moonlight, for it lit the entire place, plus the flashing lights of fireflies were everywhere providing at least a little bit of glow that made the night more beautiful. Gazing upon the sky, I was struck by the darkness of the night, darker than smeared charcoal, small splashes of gold glittering here and there as if an artist had brazenly attempted to light it without aim; smoky grey clouds deteriorate under the florescent silver beams of the moon, as if they were shadows to be banished. The stars were like diamonds illuminated in the sky thus making me realise how spectacular the place was. For me, it was really the best place I have ever been. Whatever I experienced from that place will be kept in my heart and memory forever because I know that it is probably the last time I will see that place as beautiful and conserved as it was. I hope that the people living there will continually take good care of their environment as much as they care and value themselves. My heart pounds and shrieks with some strong attachment as I feel as if there is a powerful force in my soul clinging and digging itself into the mountain, urging me not to let go. I believed that I was protected by the wings of nature and as if I was away from the demands of the mortal world.

Tom me I strongly am against the whole same gender marriage. I dont mind the same sex being together I do have a lot of homosexuals as friends and I never did anything bad about their likes of the same gender relationship. But Marriage is way too far for my blood. The fight for same gender marriage has been going on for a while till the point our president George W. Bush supports it. I have looked on the web to find some good information of the same gender marriage and for the women side of the same gender marriage, I have found the National Organization for Women, which have been around since 1966, and I found an article by Amanda Cherin and communication Intern. The article explains in 2003 that the United States Supreme Court allowed the gays and lesbians to be together but yet they are not able to get married in any state in the United States. There are is about 594,391 same gender couples that are living together in the United States and yet they dont have the right to be legally married. I believe in the sanctity of marriage. I believe a marriage between a man and a woman and I think we ought to codify that one way or the other. (President George W. Bush). Based on religion marriage is always between a man and a woman. Marriage itself I think has changed as years and years go by. That if you think about it, same sex marriage is not such a big change at all. I looked through out the history of marriage and there are so many changes like polygamous marriage was accepted in many periods of history and still going on in some parts of the world. In the mediaeval time in Europe marriage was not based on sexual love. Marriage is now gender neutral, wives and children are not the property of the husband. It is also racially neutral, letting people marry outside their race. And also marriage doesnââ¬â¢t have to be forever because divorce is easier. So I think marriage is already out of control why not same sex marriage? Mainly some religion goes against the same sex marriage based on what they believe, they believe that having the same sex marriage will put away all meaning of a marriage and also damage tradional family unions and lead to increase more homosexual couples. Christmas say that homosexuality goes against the Bible. For example a verse in the Bible, And they called unto lot, and said unto him where are the men which came in to thee this night? Bring them out unto us, that we may know them. (Genesis 19:5) or thou shalt not lie with mankind, as with womankind: it is abomination. (Leviticus 18:22). Also the other verse I have seen on the Bible which is intense to me is If a man lies with a man as one lies with a woman, both of them have done what is detestable. They must be put to death: their blood will be on their own heads. (Leviticus 20:13) So if yourself is in a same sex marriage and has a religion like this you should know you will be in trouble with God himself. What is marriage? Recently, people argue with respect to the definition of marriage. What happened to marriage? To get married is a very important event for almost everyone. Especially for women, marriage and giving a birth could be the two biggest events of their lives. Many people believe that getting married to the one whom he or she loves is natural. However, what do you think if you cannot get married to him or her because it is socially unacceptable? Andrew Sullivan and William Bennett are authors who are arguing about the homosexual marriage. Sullivan agrees with the same-sex marriage because everyone has a right to marry. On the other hand, Bennett contradicts Sullivanââ¬â¢s opinion. Bennett makes an assertion that marriage is between a man and a woman building up their entire life together. Both authorsââ¬â¢ opinions are totally different. Nevertheless, their ideas are well established. In Sullivanââ¬â¢s essay, he talks about accepting same-sex marriage. If the judge accepted homosexuals as citizens in the Supreme Court, homosexual people would feel free. They do not have to hide and tell a lie anymore. Most people wonder why they desire to get married. The reason is the same as anyone who wants to get married to the one whom he or she loves. It is normal thought. It seems easy to accept these opinions. However, it is very difficult because marriage is between a man and a woman, and this has been a general thought for a long time. Therefore, some religions refuse homosexuality, but it is not a problem any more because of the separation of the church and the state. Homosexuals just want a social right to get married. Some people still argue the definition of marriage. It has been change by homosexuality because human values are equal anyone in the world. Everyone has the same rights. Is marriage to bring up children? No, there are many married couples who do not h ave children. This is no difference between homosexual marriage and other marriage styles. Nevertheless, if there are people who disagree with the same-sex marriage, they inhibit homosexual people from staying their country (Sullivan 26). In Bennettââ¬â¢s essay, he writes two points which divide opinions about homosexual marriage. One is whether homosexual marriage strengthens or weakens the institution. The other is what the marriage is. If the definition of marriage were extended too much to include homosexual union, the tradition of marriage would be changed. Bennett asks how we can consider these people. It is difficult to say what the moral is. Marriage also means to decide your best partner. Everyone desires a beautiful life with a partner, but most marriage is not as the ideal as we think. He mentions that many supporters of homosexual couple do not share this ideal (Bennett p.30). Another different opinion from proponents to opponents of same-sex marriage is ââ¬Å"the very heart of marriage itselfâ⬠(Bennett p.30). Marriage is that a man and a woman love, respect, and help each other. That is what people learn in this society. The definition cannot be changed easily by anyone. In addition, this though t has been taught for a long time in American history. Therefore, we should respect and keep this thought. I do not think there is a common ground. Of course, both authors talk about the same-sex marriage. Besides, Sullivan agrees with this, and Bennett is the opponent. However, what Sullivan really wants to say is the right of human being. Everyone has the same right, and there is no difference between men and women and black and white. As he says, this is why homosexuality should have the same right as other people have. Right to marry is just one of the whole problems for homosexuality. In contrast, Bennett focuses on marriage. He talks about what the marriage is, and what the marriage should be. In addition to this, he mentions other types of marriages like polygamy and family marriage. If there were these styles of marriages as a culture in the US, he would accept them. He says we should not change this culture because our ancestors made this. There are many different types of love such as loving family, friendships, to love your pets, to love the one who you should not, your boyfriend or girlfriend and so on.
